“There are two important elements in self-mastery. The first is to determine your course or set the sails, so to speak, of moral standards; the other is the willpower, or the wind in the sails carrying one forward.
~ N. Eldon Tanner
Self-Mastery is a term used by people that have attained a certain level of achievement, whether it be an athlete, business man, martial artist, guru or anyone who has met or exceeded their goals through focus, determination, self-control or self-discipline. “On the other hand,” said Eldon Tanner, “those who fail to keep their goals in mind and fail to discipline themselves find that they are following detours and paths that lead to failure and destruction.”
He continues, “If you wish to achieve financial success, if you wish to be happy, if you wish to be healthy, if you would be morally clean, if you wish to find religious peace of mind, there is only one sure way, and that is the straight and narrow path
— the way of honor, the way of industry, of moderation, simplicity, and virtue… If you want to be successful or outstanding in any field of endeavor, it is important
that you determine while young to be a great boy, and not wait to be a man to be a
great man; and then have the courage and strength and determination to discipline
yourself, apply self-control and self-mastery.”
“A man has to learn that he cannot command things, but that he can command himself; that he cannot coerce the wills of others, but that he can mold and master his own will: and things serve him who serves Truth; people seek guidance of him who is master of himself.”
~ James Allen
On the road to entrepreneurial success, there are a few things that we need to consider. Firstly, we have to prioritize what is most important to us. Is it our God, our family or our career? Or, can they co-exist and where and how do we find the balance? It is evident in many people’s lives that one is more important than another, leading to an imbalance. Steve Blank shares some meaningful advice on how to build a business and balance the demands of family life, buy setting rules or boundaries and then sticking to them.
In any successful endeavour, rules, goals and boundaries need to be set. A balance needs to be achieved and endurance or self-mastery is demanded in order to achieve the desirable outcome. Along with this, is the importance of gaining the right knowledge and aligning yourself with the right people to help you in your journey to success. The Acton Foundation suggests that knowledge of one’s industry, daily operations and the ability to raise money are critical for success. They further state that “If you keep your final goal in mind, work step by step to gain knowledge and take notice of people who might be complementary partners, eventually an irresistible opportunity will appear and you will be prepared for the challenge.” (So You Want to Be an Entrepreneur?)
“You will never have a greater or lesser dominion than that over yourself…the height of a man’s success is gauged by his self-mastery; the depth of his failure by his self-abandonment. …And this law is the expression of eternal justice. He who cannot establish dominion over himself will have no dominion over others.”
~ Leonardo da Vinci
